Buying Your First Leotard

Blog

If you have started to take ballet and you are truly enjoying your time, then it may be time to buy a high-grade leotard. It is not uncommon for a beginner to put on a pair of shorts and join a class, but spend any time in a ballet class and it is plain to see that a leotard is a necessity. One of the most important reasons is it allows your instructor to see your body to correct any improper form. If you want to be better at ballet then it is vital that you receive constructive criticism. When you start looking for a good leotard here are a few things that you should look for:

Classic Fit

The classic fit for a leotard is a low neckline exposing the collarbones and a low backline. The leotard should also have ballet cut legs so the leotard comes to your hips. Once again this is to allow for your instructor to look at your body and correct any form issues. This is also the most comfortable fit for a professional ballerina. This fit is perfect for a comfortable free feel that allows you to perform at your very best.

Comfort

There are a few different materials that you can choose from, but you want to make sure that you are comfortable in the leotard. Try on a few different types of leotards and analyze how the material fits and feels for you. For the most part, you will want a material that is very light and breathable. You also want the material to be able to flex and bend with your body and you are dancing. Any type of stiffness will impede your movement and it will be hard to reach your full potential. You may also want to consider a leotard that is supportive of your breasts. Many leotards will come with double fabric in the chest area for modesty and support.

Multiple Leotards

If you are going to dance a lot, then you may want to consider buying two or more leotards. Dancing a few time a week means that you will have to wash the leotard a few times a week, and the fabric may stretch and not last as long. Try to limit the number of times that you wash your leotard so you do not go through a high-quality leotard as fast. Having multiple leotards on hand can make them all last a little bit longer.
